Abstract
Cigarettes are very controversial consumer goods because cigarettes give bad effects to consumers. Even so cigarette consumption in Indonesia is the third largest in the world. This large consumption also contributed greatly to state income. The high consumption of cigarettes in Indonesia in addition to making a major contribution to state revenue also results in high health costs that must be borne by the government due to the negative effects of smoking. This resulted in the government then having a discourse to increase the price of cigarettes to limit cigarette consumption by the public. The discourse of raising the price of cigarettes then also causes controversy because if cigarette consumption is reduced the state revenue from cigarette sales will also be reduced. This raises the desire of the writer to find out what level of community ability to buy cigarettes. The survey was conducted on cigarette consumers who visited a convenience store that sells cigarettes in the city of Semarang. Samples that can be collected are 110 respondents. From the survey conducted it is known that at the level of income the majority of respondents who were between Rp. 3,000,000 to Rp. 5,000,000, 94% of respondents stated that they would stop consuming cigarettes if the price of cigarettes reached Rp. 50,000 / pack. With the results of the survey, the government should conduct a review in raising the price of cigarettes because the reduced consumption of cigarettes by the public will also result in reduced state revenues from cigarettes. Aside from having an impact on state revenues, the reduction in cigarette consumers is also feared to have a social impact on the community, especially on cigarette entrepreneurs, cigarette industry employees and cigarette growers who grow tobacco raw materials such as tobacco farmers and clove farmers.
